Operation and Control of Multi-level Converters for Cell Balancing in EV/HEV/PHEV

Driven by the needs to reduce the dependence of fossil fuels and the environmental impact of transportation there has in recent years been an increasing interest in the electrification of vehicles. In electric vehicles (EVs) and (plug-in) hybrid electric vehicles ((P)HEV), the battery pack (BP), built from many small cells, is one of the most expensive components in the powertrain, contributing largely to the total vehicle cost. As a result, the battery lifetime is an important factor for the success of (P)HEVs and EVs. The battery lifetime is severely affected by the State-of-Charge (SoC) and temperature imbalance. To ensure uniform life-time of the cells it is, therefore, important for the Battery Management System (BMS) to utilize each cell so that the State-of-Charge (SoC) and temperature of cells remains almost balanced.

The Multi-Level Converter (MLC) is a power electronic converter which is modular in structure and hence provides ‘extra knobs’ to control and monitor the behavior of battery on cell level. The project aims at operation and control of MLC to optimize the performance of battery system to enhance the lifetime of battery pack.

The electrification of transportation is believed to have a positive social impact due to significant economic and environmental benefits. Hence, the positive results from this project will contribute to achieve the common goal of cleaner environment and enhanced utility while reducing the consumption of natural resources for sustainable future.
