The “Integrated logistics development for sustainability and competitiveness” project aims at increasing the operational efficiency and environmental sustainability within the transport and logistics system. Boundaries between organizations are in focus and how new types of collaborations create new business opportunities and remove obstacles concerning sustainability and competiveness.
The knowledge developed in the project shall contribute to a reduction of emissions of CO2 from the transport and logistics sector, without negative effects on the economic efficiency and the competiveness of the Swedish industry. Rather, the research aims at contributing to these changes so that they can be turned into business opportunities.

Towards sustainability identifying bridging logistics actions

Cost efficient measures have traditionally been driving logistics and have affected the freight transport pattern in several ways. In order to find new competitive ways, while also facing the environmental challenges from freight transports, there is a need to have a more holistic view upon the logistics system.

The purpose of the project is to determine which actions contribute to a sustainable logistics system by identifying actions in different system levels and explore how these interacts with each other and sustainability. 

The project will first identify actions that have potential to reduce the environmental impact from freight transport based on literature and perspectives from the main actors within the transport community. Actions contribution to sustainability will be analyzed according to socio-ecological sustainability principles. Finally, how actions at different part of the logistics system interact with each other and sustainability will be explored, e.g., how actions in a transport buyer’s system affect the freight forwarders operations as well as the system as a whole.

Sustainable logistics – A forwarders perspective

In this project, effective transport and logistics solutions are studied from a 3PL - perspective. The aim is to increase sustainability of logistics solutions without affecting the quality for the customer. The project identifies parameters for development of a sustainable supply chain model, as well as methods to compare the performance of supply chains that differ in terms of sustainability. Concrete actions for the 3PL-company leading to an increase in sustainability are also to be generated in the project.

The customers’ demands on the transport are investigated; if the demand can be adapted to constraints for increased sustainability such as fewer deliveries per week. DB Schenker is the 3PL-provider studied in this project, but the results are to be generalized for use in other companies as well.

Operational transport efficiency

This project analyzes how freight transport efficiency is implemented and the effects it has on externalities and competitiveness. Focus is on the transport operator and interfaces to other actors such as transport providers/forwards, transport buyers, other transport operators and society.

The project will generate measures and recommendations for transport operators, such as the economical consequences for actors implementing transport efficiency measures. A future scenario will be proposed for intermodal freight distribution of part loads in cities by introducing a potential and partial fossil free freight fleet.

The demand requirements of transport buyers

Agreements between the transport buyer and seller influence the environmental performance of freight transport. The focus area in this project is the requirements set on the transport by the buyer and further how the purchasing process influences the transport solution and sustainability considerations. Demands from the transport buyer can limit the design of a solution, for example demands concerning deliveries at specific points in time, speed or frequency of deliveries. Throughout the project, the overall aim is to understand how the purchasing process can be aligned with efficiency and sustainability objectives.

Anticipated benefits from the project, for transport buying companies, are increased understanding of the connection between decisions made concerning freight transport and environmental impact. Companies can for example see the appropriateness of their transport purchasing process. An increase in awareness of environmental issues in the purchasing process could also lead to increased target setting and measurements to reduce environmental impact related to transportation.

Changed actor roles in logistics networks increased sustainability through collaboration

Product Recovery in Closed-Loop Supply Networks
This project will focus on how different companies should take advantage of business opportunities related to sustainability issues through closed-loop supply chain management. Reverse supply chains introduce new operation and affect several different internal functions, such as product design, sales and distribution. New external relationships need to be established with actors, involved in relatively novel activities and resources, such as collectors, recyclers and governmental organizations. The adaptation and collaboration between these actors can be difficult and are today rather undeveloped.

The main research issue in this project is to explore the kind of resources, actors, and activities that exist within the closed-loop supply chains. The project will explore the fit of resources, coordination of the activities and interactions between the actors of the reverse and the forward supply chains.

Relationships and interdependencies linking suppliers and customers are the key ingredients of the theoretical framework, the industrial network approach, used for the study.

Sustainable supply chains of forest residues

A feasible alternative of renewable energy sources is use of the forest bi-product, residues, as biomass for energy purposes. Today there is a large unused potential, which is not used due to the costly transportation of biomass, which occurs since forest residues have a low bulk volume and high moisture content. By implementing a pre-treatment process that removes the moisture early in the supply chain and improves the logistical properties of the forest residues, the unused potential can become economically feasible to use.

The overall aim presented in this research project is to generate knowledge on how the implementation of a pre-treatment process can increase the efficiency of a supply chain of forest residues. The project consists of three studies. The first study aims at providing a framework for the current state of supply chains of forest residues. The second and third study aims at studying future supply chains of forest residues where pre-treatment processes have been implemented. The project is conducted in collaboration with ETPC at Umeå University.
