Professor

John Holmberg is Vice President for Chalmers University of Technology with responsibility for the Systems and Environment Initiative. He is Professor of Physical Resource Theory and he also holds Sweden's first UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development. He is a member of the board of Swentec, Swedish Environmental Technology Council, since 2008; member of UNESCO expert panel for the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development since 2006; member of the editorial board to the International Journal of Industrial Ecology since 2005; member of the European Commission's expert panel for eco-innovations in the EU, 2006-2008. During 2004 and 2005 he worked both for the Swedish and the UK Ministry of Environment on sustainable construction and energy efficiency. In 2003 he co-authored on a report on decoupling to the Swedish Environmental Advisory Board, which he presented at WSSD in Johannesburg, as well as a report on technology and policy for sustainable development which was prepared for the European Commission on a request from the Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström to serve as a background for a Commission report to the EU Summit in Barcelona.

John Holmberg’s main research interests are sustainable consumption, energy efficiency, industrial ecology, decoupling, back-casting, principles and indicators for sustainability and education for sustainable development (ESD).

In 2001 he was awarded "the best university teacher in environmental science in Sweden" by the National Agency for Higher Education.

In his doctoral dissertation, John Holmberg developed four principles for sustainable development together with a back-casting planning method, which has been spread internationally and used as the scientific underpinning by The Natural Step Foundation for strategic planning and educational purpose outside the academia in several countries. Until 2001 he was board member and the scientific director of the Natural Step Foundation.

John Holmberg gives many external lectures each year to other universities, corporations, local authorities, organisations and to the general public. He also has a broad experience of publishing in non-scientific journals and of contributing in television and radio programmes.
