Patiently impatient – Belief in the potential of the sun

It is not a matter of physical resources. Nor is it a matter of technology. At a reasonable cost, 10 billion people could live on our level. The problem lies in the readjustment to a new, sustainable energy system. Can we bring this about sufficiently quickly?

Brazilian beef – greater impact on the environment than we realize

Increased export of Brazilian beef indirectly leads to deforestation in the Amazon. New research from Chalmers and SIK that was recently published in Environmental Science & Technology shows that impact on the climate is much greater than current estimates indicate.  Researchers like Sverker Molander from Environmental Systems Analysis are now demanding that indirect effect on land be included when determining a product’s carbon footprint.

Climate tax on meat and milk mean less greenhouse gases

A climate tax on meat and milk could reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from European agriculture by about seven percent. If the land freed up by this were to be used to cultivate bioenergy, the emissions reduction could be six times greater. This is shown in an article published in the scientific journal Climatic Change, written by Stefan Wirsenius, Fredrik Hedenus and Kristina Mohlin.

Coal, oil and gas vital to a global climate agreement

In the short term it is impossible to induce the world's fossil-dependent countries to switch to renewable energy. The key to a binding climate agreement could instead be to provide them with access to technology that rids facilities, coal-fired power stations in particular, of carbon dioxide emissions. The technology is known as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and Chalmers is involved in its development.

Smart grid revolutionises the electricity market

Is smart grid the technology that will result in consumers eventually abandoning the national electricity grid and managing on electricity generated in the home? Or is the most important function of smart grid to link up the electricity grid on a global level and facilitate investment in renewable energy sources alongside traditional sources? The one thing the experts are agreed on is that smart grid is set to revolutionise the electricity market.
