Lars Öhrström is professor of inorganic chemistry and specializes in coordination chemistry.
He is responsible of the first year chemistry course (“Chemistry with Biochemistry”) for the three engineering programs at the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. This course runs from September until mid-March and enrols about 180 students and involves some 25 faculty members and graduate students from the different chemical disciplines.
He also teaches coordination chemistry and organometallic chemistry at the 2:nd and 3:rd years of these programs as well as the “Applied Coordination Chemistry” course in the International Master’s programs in Chemistry and Bioscience and Materials and Nanotechnology.
He obtained his engineering degree from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm where he also got a PhD in inorganic chemistry in 1993. He went on to do post-doctoral work on molecule based magnetic materials with Paul Rey at the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA) in Grenoble, France. In 1995 he returned to Sweden and started his work at Chalmers and became a senior lecturer in 1997 and professor in 2004. His research interests are experimental and theoretical approaches to molecule based materials and crystal engineering with focus on coordination compounds and three-dimensional nets, "Metal-Organic Frameworks", bioinorganic chemistry and organometallic chemistry.
He is the author and co-author of more than 60 research papers and monograph (with Dr. Krister Larsson) on molecular network compounds and "Metal-Organic Frameworks": Molecule Based Materials – The Structural Network Approach. Together with business developers from Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship and researchers from the University of Alexandria (Egypt) he is working on the commercialization of new silver antimicrobial compounds.
He has a long-standing collaboration with CEA in Grenoble and the University of Lyon, where he frequently spends time as guest researcher, and he is currently coordinating a Nordic-Baltic network on Crystal Engineering and Supramolecular Materials. During his career he has worked in the USA, Switzerland, Botswana and France. He is National Representative in IUPAC’s (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) Division for Inorganic Chemistry and a member of the editorial board for Kemivärlden Biotech med Kemisk Tidskrift.
He was awarded the 2008 stipend in Grez-sur-Loing for natural scientists from the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation.
His hobbies include long distance biking, travels in southern Africa and reading. In addition he is a miserable piano player.
