Systems biology is a multi-disciplinary research field where mathematicians, bioinformaticians, engineers, chemists and biologists work together in vivo, in vitro and in silico with the objective to understand, quantitatively describe and design the living cells. We are especially interested in the field of metabolic engineering in which we develop efficient cell factories for the production of new drugs, chemicals and biofuels. Besides the biotechnology, we also use our expertise to study fundamental cellular and molecular process and we extensively use mathematical models and computational predictions in combination with state of the art experimentation to understand the molecular mechanisms of human diseases.

The Systems Biology Group is a new, dynamic, international and multidisciplinary group: we started the group at Chalmers in summer 2008 and now we are about 30 people, from 15 countries and the average age of the group is below 30! Our backgrounds cover mathematicians, bioinformaticians, chemical engineers and biologists. We have great international exposure and our collaborators include all major universities and companies in the field of microbial systems biology. We are funded by the Chalmers foundation, Wallenberg foundation, Vetenskapsrådet, several EU grants and several industrial partners
