It shall be hosted by Rizvi College of Architecture, Mumbai, India in association with The Council of Architecture, (COA); Brihan Mumbai Centre of the Indian Institute of Architects; Forum of Colleges of Architecture, Mumbai Region; Maharashtra Association of Schools of Architecture (MASA); Indian Association of Schools of Architecture; and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA). ICHH 2009 shall be held from January 29-31, 2009 in Mumbai, India.We are pleased to invite educators, researchers, architects, planners, engineers, social scientists, environmentalists, policy makers, administrators, developers, managers, corporate associations, non-governmental organizations, concerned citizens and students interested in revitalizing city centres, encouraging public transportation systems, promoting transit area development and developing sustainable humane habitats to actively participate in ICHH 2009. While on one side it has led to mushrooming of shopping malls and multiplexes on the other side the areas around city centres and transit hubs have been neglected. The old city centers, suburban and district centers around transit hubs call for urgent attention of architects, planners and policy makers. Sub-themes:Revitalising City Centres and Transit HubsThe areas around transit hubs usually provide a number of jobs in various businesses and commercial firms. They also act as city center or district centers with varied shopping facilities, formal and informal markets, a whole range of services and supporting small-scale workshops.Sustainable Public Transportation:As the price of petroleum products continue to rise, the importance of public transportation systems becomes more critical for the very survival of urban centers and agglomeration.Cultural Nodes:The areas around transit hubs also attract educational and cultural institutions as well as entertainment facilities. Cultural nodes often surrounding major educational facilities such as universities and colleges, cultural institutions such as theatre, opera house, museum, art galleries or entertaintment facilities such as cinema or multiplexes. Role of major urban intervention and development of new landmarks such as convention centre, large exhibition centres in promoting urban transformation.Urban Squares and Civic Spaces:While the traditional city centres provides adequate urban spaces as small and large squares and were surrounded by important open spaces in the form of gardens and parks, many of the contemporary cities lack such civic facilities.Sustainable Humane HabitatsThe case studies of traditional, modern and post-modern habitats including conservation, revitalization, redevelopment and development of new civic centres and transit area development projects.Prof. Akhtar Chauhan, Convener, ICHH 2009
