Architectural research has been conducted at Chalmers since the 1960s. Today, research includes design and practice based methods such as projective research, often combined in transdisciplinary modes with methods adapted from science, social sciences, humanities and fine arts.
Chalmers Architecture leads and takes part in two strong national research environments Architecture in the Making and Architecture in Effect, www.arkitekturakademin.se. These environments are independent of, but partly linked to several of the department profiles.
Researchers of the Department also participate in the research program Homes for Tomorrow, www.chalmers.se/cee/h42-en.
The national Centre for Health Care Architecture is hosted by Chalmers Architecture, www.chalmers.se/arch/SV/samverkan/centrum-for-vard/om-cva/om-cfv. A centre for Architecture and Housing is in development.

Architecture in the Making: Arcitecture as a making discipline and material practice
Project leader: Fredrik Nilsson, Chalmers
Senior researchers: Claes Caldenby (Chalmers), Catharina Dyrssen (Chalmers), Liane Thuvander (Chalmers), Paula Femenías (Chalmers), Tim Anstey (KTH), Johan Mårtelius (KTH), Kerstin Barup (LTH), Thomas Olofsson (UU), guest researchers and doctoral students.
Practice oriented research and creatively making discipline for, sustainable development.
- Material making – to develop analyses of the material in architecture; concepts, artefacts and tools in design processes
- History – investigating history as built environment and tradition
- Investigative modeling – explorative, digital processes and ”hands on” modelling
- Alteration – conservation and transformation as architectural practice, existing built environments and cultural values.
Architecture in Effect: Rethinking the social in architecture
Project leader: Katja Grillner, KTH
Senior researchers: Mattias Kärrholm (LTH), Roemer van Toorn (UU), Helena Mattson (KTH), Gunnar Sandin (LTH), Sten Gromark (Chalmers), Catharina Dyrssen (Chalmers), and researchers from Södertörns högskola.
New theories and methods for critical descriptions and interpretations of architecture.
- Critical historiography – the role of history in architecture
- Material conditions – the influence of material surroundings on the social
- Critical projections – the architectural project as condition for change
- Architects in formation – hur assignments and professional roles of the architect in a sociocultural context
