ARCHITECTURE

Chalmers Architecture develops professional skills and theoretical knowledge concerning buildings, built environments in the urban landscape for sustainable development. We aim to promote balanced resource use and high quality conditions for human life, from urban regional scale to building details.

Architectural knowledge at Chalmers is grounded in design thinking which unites artistic methods and technical research with socio-cultural perspectives. The central mission for this knowledge is to develop syntheses for the built environment, which includes to

•    handle complex problems and project contexts of the built environment
•    interpret historical, environmental, social, cultural, economic and material conditions
•    explore, rethink, visualize and communicate images for the future
•    organize, form and lead the realization of buildings and built environments
•    lead design processes.

Chalmers Architecture especially recognizes
•    visionary and realistic sustainability thinking at all levels
•    practice relevant engagement in important issues in society
•    explorative and challenge driven work modes based on architectural skills and design thinking
•    research based education and close integration between research, learning and innovation
•    active collaboration between architects and engineers
•    a flexible academic setting of advanced technical knowledge at Chalmers
•    close connections to other academic fields at University of Gothenburg, e.g. Cultural heritage, Fine Arts, Social studies and Medicine
•    collaboration with society and industry
•    an open, creative, affirmative, gender equal and co-operative working climate.

The department has four integrated profiles for research and education (see Research):
•    Form and Technology
•    Space and Activity
•    Conservation and Transformation
•    Urban Design and Development

The profiles are united by design thinking, architectural theory and history, and sustainability.
