Heavy Ion Physics

We are studying nuclear fragmentation, mainly by analysis of measured data and improving, benchmarking and validating different particle and transport models and codes which simulate the transport of particles and heavy ions in different materials. The most important work in this field is the development and improvement of the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). This code is developed in collaboration with JAERI, RIST and Tohuku university in Japan and GSI in Germany.

We are also involved in improvement of treatment planning codes for heavy ion radiation therapy, and analysis of the risks for secondary cancer when using photons, protons and heavy ions for radiation therapy.

The development of a new detector system for on-line measurements and evaluation of the integrity of nuclear fuel and control rods during reactor operation is another area we work with.
