The research activities of prof. Kinaret are divided into fundamental and applied studies on the border between physics and electronics. The main research direction is nanoelectromechanical structures comprising different nanocarbons (fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene layers) as mechanically active elements. The applied research focuses on uses of NEMS in RF technology and on optimizing the behavior of electronic components by incorporating dynamically modified device geometries. This work is carried out in close collaborations with academic and industrial experimental partners, both locally and internationally. The fundamental studies aim at developing multi-scale models of nanoelectromechanical components by combining quantum mechanical descriptions with macroscopic dynamic modeling. A second, more recent research direction is the study of metamaterials designed from carbon nanotubes. We are presently investigating CNT-based photonic crystals in a close collaboration with local experimental groups, and expect that these studies will grow substantially in the next few years.
