Baltic Open

Baltic Open took place in Karlstad this weekend, friday was the first day of competition with a quite big amount for success for the CFS cars. Saturday was not any good at all and ended in a tire-barrier for CFS11 while CFS managed to finish all dynamic events

NOT A VERY GOOD DAY FOR CFS

Today it was time for sprint and endurance, located at Gelleråsen Go-kart track some 70 km east of Karlstad. The track appeared to be very nice to drive, as long as you managed to stay on the somewhat slippery surface, although some tire-barriers are located on the outside of some parts of the track. The first car to have a close contact with the barriers was Tallin who broke their front right suspension during the warm up. Thanks to a big supply of spare parts they managed to weld new parts on site and managed a top 5-time in the sprint just 4h after the accident. Very impressing and congratulations to a great work! By that time both CFS 10 and CFS11 had faced some severe problem, CFS10 were very close to losing a tire but the car were stopped before anything on the car were damaged. CFS11 did then manage to set a second-fastest time at that point with 40.86(turned out to be fourth fastest by the end of the day) but on the next runt disaster struck, twice. First the car locked up in a corner, so now we know that we have a very stiff nose cone, although Niklas have to give it some "love" before it is back in its old shape. The next lap the front left wheel had way too much "interaction" with the barriers and the result was "slight to much toe out". Estimates is roughly 80-90 degrees.

As CFS11 were loaded into a trailer for transportation back to Chalmers to get some care in the workshop, CFS10 made their way through endurance without any further incidents. Overall winner is Darmstadt who have won every single event (split with CFS11 in acceleration)

FIRST DAY OF BALTIC OPEN

After the opening ceremony on the main square in Karlstad yesterday, it was time for the first parts of the competition today. The first event was skidpad (figure-8). From a Chalmers perspective this was not too exciting since we ended up in the middle of the result list, although we claim that this is the part of the competition where we have the least chance to win.

The second event was acceleration, simply to drive 75m as fast as possible from. This turned out to be a nerve-thrilling experience. First Darmstadt started with a time of 4.23s which Annika in the CFS11 managed to beat with a time of 4.18. Good enough for victory? No, Darmstadt made 4.15, good enough to win? No! Per Björe-Dahl did 4.14. Good enough? No! Darmstadt did 4.13....but so did Per as well! Both CFS and Darmstadt continued to do times in the span of 4.15 to 4.25, a very exciting experience that ended with a draw with two winners (Although Christian Amersbach can claim a double victory since he built the Darmstadt car last year, and CFS11 this year*).

*At Baltic Open all Formula Student cars are allowed that can pass scrutineering. This is why both CFS10 & CFS11 are present, Karlstad has three cars and a car from KTH, built in 2004 is competing in the same class.
