Eco Marathon 2012

Welcome to the homepage of team Chalmers EcoMarathon. Shell Eco-marathon is a yearly competition between universities competing in increased mileage.

The next competition will be held in the city of Rotterdam. The team is working on the evolution of the vehicles. The Smarter vehicle will be replaced by a new vehicle due to regulation issues. The Vera vehicle however will compete also this season and might achieve even better results than previous years.

General Info about Eco Marathon

The Shell Eco-marathon is a yearly competition where participating schools and universities attempt to build and test energy efficient vehicles that travel the farthest using least possible fuel. The competition itself has humble beginnings: it started as a friendly bet between two scientists at Shell’s labs in the USA, to see who could get the most mileage out of their cars. Today’s form of the competition first took place in France in 1985. Today, the competition attracts the best engineering talent from around the world.

The competition is divided into two classes. Vehicles in the prototype class are aimed at being fully optimized for aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. The urban concept class is for vehicles that are closer to cars on the road today, these vehicles have to pass certain roadworthiness criteria (like having four wheels, doors, head and tail lights, etc.).

Eco Marathon at Chalmers

From year 2011 the Eco Marathon is no longer held as a course at Chalmers. However the project is still running and students at Chalmers are able to join the team.

Mostly the team identifies areas which require further work in order to increase the mileage traveled. These identified areas results in a couple of projects each year which students can apply for.

Students interested in applying for the team should visit the project section for available projects.
