Peter Olsson, professor of Mechanics has previously among other things been vice president of Chalmers University of Technology, with responsibility for all education at the BSc and MSc levels. Aftter a decade of administration and academic leadership he has now, with a sigh of relief, returned to research and teaching.

Peter's research has been focused around direct and inverse problems for mechanical waves in solids and structures, and around analytic and numeric models with applications in e.g. seismic wave propagation and in non-destructive evaluation with ultrasound.

His present research interests revolve around how one, by a judicious choice of material parameters, can re-route elastodynamic waves. It would, for example, sometimes be desirable to be able to steer ground waves around sensitive infrastructure rather than letting the waves hit the structure.

The methods Peter is developing are inspired by the so called transformation optics approach to cloaking, an approach that has in other contexts like electromagnetics, given recipes for the design of metamaterials for "invisibility cloaks." However, the mechanical applications, on which Peter is working, do not concern "invisibility," but deal with how to protect structures or parts of a structure from potentially harmful transient waves (or time harmonic vibrations) by re-routing the oscillations.

Another part of his present research interests revolve around novel methods for medical diagnostics using elastodynamic vibrations. These methods, which in some cases are promising to be superior to ultrasonic detection, include Magnetic Resonance Elastography, MRE, and Elastic Surface Impedance Tomography.
