Cell B - 1-cylinder rig for heavy truck diesel engines

Cell B is a test cell equipped with an AVL 1-cylinder rig based on a Volvo D12 engine designed for heavy duty performance. The one cylinder engine has a displacement volume of 2 liter and, for that type of engine, a fairly low swirling number. The rig can be equipped with both unit injectors and common rail system for studying various injector parameters.

Due to the various injection systems experiment with different fuels can be made. Examples of fuels used are Fischer-Tropsch (FT), RME, PME, DME and various mixtures of alcohol and diesel and diesel/water emulsions. The intake air in the test cell is conditioned and can be mixed with exhaust gases in various degrees (EGR) to study the combustion process and the emissions. For studies of the combustion process various optical instruments can be used, for example a so-called Endoscope that is fitted in the engine body.
